It applies when family members wish to come to Italy in a second time period.

Family members need a visa for family purposes to enter Italy. Visa is issued according to the entry clearance that has been requested by their family member (applicant) in Italy.

Applicant will be asked to submit proof of the relationship with the family member, appropriate income and a suitable accommodation.

How to apply?
It envisages the issue of an entry clearance (Nulla osta) to be requested online to the local Prefettura. It is issued in maximum 90 days.
Priority processing for applications from holders of research permit/visa.

The online procedure must be carried out both by the applicant in Italy (see point 1 and 2) and the family member upon arrival in Italy (see points 3,4,5 and 6).

1_Request of entry clearance (Nulla osta)
The request should be submitted online at Ministry of the Interior website (click on Sportello Unico Immigrazione). You will be asked to send online a scanned copy of the documents in one PDF file. It is recommended to get assistance from an acknowledged Patronato. Contact us to get a list of Patronati.

2_Interview at Sportello unico immigrazione and collect nulla osta
After the online request, you will be informed by registered mail about the interview. Take with you the revenue stamp of €16,00 used for the online application plus another one (of €16), along with the originals of the submitted documentation.

The nulla osta may take maximum 90 days to be ready. A copy will be issued at the interview.
Please send the copy to your family members who need to contact the Italian Embassy to get the entry visa.

3_Collect the visa at the Italian Embassy (this is up to your family members).
Italian Embassy will examine the documentation about your family status (marriage certificate issued by the competent authority no more than 6 months before the application, birth certificate for children). A visa for family reasons will be issued.

N.B. Certificates or any other documents issued by a foreign authority other than Italian need to be translated in Italian and legalised by the Italian Embassy to be accepted once in Italy. Documents with apostille are legally recognised in Italy provided that they are translated in Italian.

WHITIN 8 DAYS from the arrival in Italy family members need to:


4_Register at the Sportello Unico Immigrazione
(SUI) at the local Prefettura to collect the application kit for family residence permit already filled out, Italian tax code (codice fiscale) and original copy of nulla osta.
Take with you a revenue stamp €16,00 for each request for residence permit (FORM1), originals and copies of the family member’ passport.

For SUI at Trieste Prefettura ONLY : for the registration you need to book an appointment by writing in advance to sportellounico.pref_trieste@interno.it. Please attach a copy of visa and passports of your family members, and specify the date of arrival in Italy.

5_Send the application kit for the permit at the Post office (take the number at the ticket system) along with the documentation required. Please visit the Family residence permit webpage to see the list of documents. The post office will give you a receipt of the application (keep it with you until you get the permit) and the appointment at the immigration office at Questura (don’t miss it!)
